What Is Meta AI?

Meta AI is a chatbot that is available on many platforms, like WhatsApp, which is the most commonly used platform. There, the Meta AI chatbot provides different features.

For example, if you request the AI chatbot to generate an image on WhatsApp, it will do so and provide you with the image. Similarly, if you share a streak with the AI chatbot on Snapchat, it responds and answers you (well, meta ai is not a feature of Snapchat, but it's similar to why i'm mentioning it.) These creative AI features help entertain users and assist in answering basic queries.

When Was Meta Ai Introduced On Social Media Platforms?

Meta AI on Ray-Ban Smart Glasses:

Meta AI made its debut as a voice assistant on the second generation of Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses in September 2023, which is in line with Meta's attempts to integrate AI into wearable technology.

Multimodal Capabilities:

By April 2024, Meta AI added multimodal input capability through computer vision. This is in line with Meta's focus on bringing sophisticated AI models, including multimodal systems, to its devices and platforms.

Integration into Horizon OS:

In July 2024, Meta AI with Vision became part of Horizon OS on Meta Quest hardware instead of the former voice assistant. This is part of updates to Horizon OS that included new features such as the "Hey Meta" wake word for interacting with Meta AI.

Meta launched its AI chatbot features on its social media sites in April 2024, integrating them into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp in a bid to boost user engagement and interaction.

Meta rolled out these AI features to users in the United Kingdom and Brazil in October 2024, enabling users to create text and images in the apps and through Ray-Ban Meta glasses.

By January 2025, Meta progressed further with the integration of AI by developing artificially created bot accounts on Instagram and Facebook, like "Jane Austen," "Liv," and "Carter." These accounts were part of an experimental campaign to test novel forms of user interaction through AI-created personas.

Common Scenarios: Why Do People Turn Off Meta AI?

Loss Of Control

Many users feel that Meta AI's image generation feature is completely unsafe, and it is making their social media experience strange. For example, some people say they have found AI-generated images of themselves while scrolling through their feeds, even though they never gave permission for this or allowed it. However, their images suddenly appearing on social media as unexpected content is ruining their experience.

To resolve this problem, Meta can offer stronger opt-in choices, enabling users to determine if they wish to see AI-generated content in their feeds. Furthermore, a specific setting to disable personalized AI suggestions can assist users in taking back control.

Ethical Issues

Most concern the ethics of AI, especially data protection and permission. Users are afraid Meta AI is capturing personal information to use in training its models without permission.

Some users on forums have complained about AI chatbots mimicking real people. Also, they are concerned that their information is being used without permission. To address this, Meta must create higher transparency levels including clearer data policies and the ability for users to choose not to let AI collect data. Make sure AI models don't hold sensitive information and keep users updated on AI news to build trust.

Increased Clutter and Spam

A few users complain that AI-pushed content makes their social media use more clogged, filled with unnecessary or redundant content. Some Facebook users said that AI suggestions are cluttering their newsfeeds and hiding updates from friends and family. This situation might be addressed by providing users with a better way to control AI-generated content, like having an option to block or filter AI-pushed posts.

An optimized AI settings menu might enable users to personalize their experience by cutting down on extra suggestions. We will discuss it next.
